Tyson Fury vowed to not underestimate significant underdog Otto Wallin in a Las Vegas news conference where the heavyweight maintained he could know Spanish.
Fury, 31, takes on Wallin on Saturday night, filling the coveted Sin City fight night held on Mexican Independence Day weekend.
Wallin, 28, has 20 wins from 20 struggles but Fury is a 1-25 bookies’ favorite.
“I really don’t underestimate anyone, I’ll respect everyone,” said Fury.
“I could train to get a guy like he has 20 knockouts in a row. The tall southpaw is obviously a challenge but I have not met a question that I could not defeat or even a mountain I couldn’t climb – he will be no exception.
“Hopefully we go for a beer after.”
Fury has tried to align himself. He has referred to himself as”El Rey Gitano”, which means”The Gypsy King”.
At one point in the news conference, a reporter challenged Fury to comprehend that a question asked in Spanish.
After initially offering a stock answer, Fury concluded:”And I do adore cuddly toys and crayons, thank you for asking.”
His response drew widespread laughter and Fury then told.
“I was not supposed to box on this weekend,” Fury added.
“When we heard Saul’Canelo’ Alvarez wouldn’t be battling in Las Vegas with this weekend I believed what a shock. This was a unique weekend for many years. I thought the Mexican men and women will not have a principal event so I brought my fight date forward four weeks.”
Together with Fury’s entourage, including his brother Tommy and Love Island star Molly Mae, loving his funny display, his UK promoter Frank Warren hunted to focus minds by stating just how much was at stake against Wallin given a rematch with WBC world heavyweight winner Deontay Wilder is set for early in 2020.
“One punch can alter the whole thing,” worried Warren.
Fury added:”Is Wallin knocking me out? Definitely not. I really don’t know a lot about Otto and sometimes that’s a good thing.
“Sometimes once you understand a whole lot about an opponent it does not turn me on fully, when it is unknown it’s much more exciting.
“I feel good, healthy, have trained really difficult, weight is perfect, trauma free, sharp, and rejuvenated. I feel ready for a fight that is fantastic. I am as powerful as I have been.”
Fury will come face-to-face with Wallin in Friday’s weigh-in, before a T-Mobile Arena bout where he’ll seek to expand his record of 28 wins and one draw.
US promoter Bob Arum pointed to the inspiration Wallin could draw from the jolt brought on by heavyweight Ingemar Johansson in arriving to stun the Floyd Paterson in 1959.
Wallin replied:”I come from a little region in Sweden and now I’m on the large stage. I’ve dreamed of this and am prepared to put it all on the line.
“I am well schooled, I’ve great offenceand I think I have what is necessary to cause an upset.”
Saturday’s bout is anticipated to start at around 05:00 BST on Sunday at the UK and will be aired on BBC Radio 5 Live using full live text commentary about the BBC Sport website.
