Eli on Daniel Jones: ‘Don’t feel like it’s a competition’

New York Giants coach Pat Shurmur’s closing words before breaking up for the summer indicated Big Blue would foster a quarterback competition between Eli Manning and rookie Daniel Jones when training camp opens.
The remarks surprised many following the Giants insisted all spring that Manning remained primed to begin a second season.
Manning himself isn’t affected by Shurmur. At the Manning Passing Academy, Eli informed NFL Network’s Rhett Lewis Friday that he doesn’t believe he’s fighting with Jones to maintain his job.

“I mean , I don’t feel like it’s a competition,” Manning said in an interview that will air on NFL Network’s Total Access Friday night. “I really feel like I have to do my job and I’ve got to compete every day and try to get better every day. That’s the way it’s been my entire life and that’s just the way I have always approached practice every day to improve, to earn my place on the group, to make the respect of the teammates and do it annually.”
Manning does not consider Jones contest and said he has no issue nurturing a rookie QB that the Giants hope will become the next franchise signal-caller.
“We have got new guys and I am trying to construct a relationship together and get them up to speed so I am trying to perform my job from the quarterback room,” Manning explained. “I have always been great with young quarterbacks, whoever’s been in there, trying to get them up to speed, educating them about defenses or fashions or what our defense performs. So I am doing exactly the identical thing with Daniel and now I’m likely to be a fantastic teammate, I am likely to do the very best I could do and help everyone on the Giants be prosperous.”
Manning’s dismissal of a supposed QB contest similarly echoes Jones’ response to Shurmur’s comments, once the rookie said he had been told by trainers he’d have a opportunity to start.
Whether or not it’s a full-blown competition, the repetitions each QB gets when training camp opens on July 24 will be closely monitored. A buzz will begin if Jones gets repetitions with the 1s early in camp, but Manning doesn’t sound worried about that possibility.
Manning noticed that he recalls his own”contest” with Kurt Warner back in 2004 — the veteran started the first half of the season before Big Blue turned into Manning for the final seven tilts.
“Definitely drawing on that and that I speak to Daniel and I see so many similarities at the situation and the way things are moving and what he’s trying to perform, his character,” Manning explained. “He is coming into this team, he’s only trying to learn the playbook, learn the names of everyone, got to earn the respect of his teammates. He has so much happening. He has got the New York media, coping with themall of a sudden they’re saying things Day 1. … So only work hard, take your job seriously, but don’t take yourself too seriously — if you’re able to do this — like your teammates, listen to your coaches and we’re all in this together and we will get through it.”
Manning also confessed he has seen the memes indicating Jones is a facsimile of himself, also noted their personalities are similar as rookies.
“I see it,” Manning explained. “He is a fantastic kid, he’s quiet and he’s only hoping to understand, get a fantastic sense of when to allow his character come out. I was the exact same way. My newcomer I wasn’t going to say — Tiki Barber, Michael Strahan, you have these huge personalities — I’m just going to keep my mouth shut, be on time, work my tail off at the weight space, ask my questions to the trainer after the interview is over and make sure I know what I’m doing before tell Tiki exactly what his route is or I tell Amani Toomer,’Hey, I do not believe you did that right.’ You have to make the respect. You have to get struck in the mouth a few days and get up… before you do a whole lot of speaking.”
